Time to grab a camera and head out to the Salton Sea! Check-out the stunning man-made sea, smack in the middle of the desert. You'll encounter abandoned buildings, geographic formations, ruins, mud volcanoes, some murky gross questionable stuff, among many other things. (Heck, the sand around the lake is composed of crushed fish skeletons, for gosh sakes.)

Located about 2.5 hours northeast of San Diego, the Salton Sea is a wonderland for photographers! We'll head-up early, stay late and be home the same day.

Anyone is welcome to come with. We'll need some drivers, and each passenger will be expected to pitch-in for gas. (You don’t need an SUV for the trip, but we'll need a vehicle with decent tires and good air conditioning.)

Even if you're not a photographer, it'll be a fun day trip.

Meet to carpool/caravan at 6am at Mike Trueblood's office parking lot (I2B Networks). There's plenty of parking for everyone; there's also a 7-Eleven and Starbucks very close-by to kick it off right!

Please don't be late. The group will want to arrive in time to catch the best lighting conditions.

What to bring:

  • Sunscreen
  • Bug spray (trust us on this one, OK?)
  • Your camera, extra batteries, storage cards, etc.
  • A photo ID (there's a border checkpoint)
  • Comfortable clothing & walking shoes
  • A hat, if you want
  • Sunglasses
  • Money for gas
  • A small cooler and drinks (the group will stop at convenience stores as well)
  • A sense of adventure!

Before the big trip, check-out the film Plagues and Pleasures of The Salton Sea... it explains the history (as well as the stench!)

Mike Trueblood says: "After making 2 trips out there, I always find something to photograph. It’s an amazing, scary, gross, and fascinating."
